Today I created an Earth setup in Cinema 4D and Redshift. It’s basically a surface sphere, a cloud sphere and a volumetric atmosphere.
The maps are downloadable from NASA but also included as 16k versions in the project file. For the clouds I used subsurface scattering to give them some self illumination and a volumetric look.
For the atmosphere I normally create a third sphere with a set of Fresnel shaders. But for the first time I used a spherical volume and a Redshift volume shader to create volumetric scattering and absorption.
It is by far not physically correct and off scale, but I like the result.
Here are two unedited renders. On the second image one see some dark lines which is due to the volume sphere’s mid resolution.
